A New Central Florida AC Is Mostly Compromise

Replacing a central air conditioner around Orlando is less about picking a brand and more about deciding which compromises you can live with. A smaller system dries the air better but has less margin on a 95 degree afternoon. A high efficiency unit costs more up front and pays it back quickly or slowly depending on how hard the house works. The refrigerant inside the equipment, the wiring that feeds it and the sizing math behind it all pull in different directions, and the right answer for a two story stucco house in Horizon West is rarely the right answer for an older block ranch in Winter Park.

Sorting through those competing pulls is where an installer who starts with a load calculation earns the job. TXT Home Services, a family owned company based in Winter Garden, sizes every AC installation from the house itself instead of copying the old nameplate. Because it holds Florida licenses for both air conditioning and electrical work, the circuit, panel and disconnect get checked by the same team that sets the condenser. Homeowners from Clermont to Lake Nona see the price in writing before any work begins, and 21 months of 0% financing is available, so calling (407) 906-3142 before collecting another round of quotes is a sensible first move.

    Capacity against comfort

Why bigger tempts people. An oversized unit almost never draws a complaint on install day. A 4 ton system in a house that needs 3 pulls the temperature down fast, and during the hottest week of August that feels like proof the choice was right.

What it quietly costs. In this climate the air conditioner is also the main dehumidifier. Moisture only leaves the house when warm air crosses a cold coil long enough for water to condense and drain away. An oversized system reaches the thermostat setting in minutes and shuts off before the coil has done much drying, which is how a house ends up cool and clammy at the same time. University of Florida extension guidance on sizing and selecting a home air conditioner makes the same point: matching capacity closely to the real load improves humidity control and usually saves energy.

What settles it. A Manual J calculation built from actual window areas, insulation levels, orientation and duct location. Florida’s energy code has long required a sizing calculation on file when both the outdoor condenser and the indoor coil are replaced, so a quote that simply repeats the old tonnage skips a step the building department expects. Variable speed and two stage equipment soften this trade-off by running at low output for long stretches, but they cannot rescue a system that was sized by guesswork.

Leftover stock against the newer refrigerants

The shift. Residential split systems are now built around A2L refrigerants, mostly R-454B and R-32, which carry a far lower global warming potential than R-410A. This year the EPA finalized a rule allowing R-410A equipment manufactured before the 2025 cutoff to still be installed, removing a deadline that would have stranded warehouse inventory. The agency’s page on refrigerant technology transition rules lays out the timeline and the rule documents.

Why older stock appeals. Leftover R-410A units are sometimes priced to clear shelves, and some homeowners like equipment that technicians have serviced for two decades.

Why it may not hold up. R-410A supply keeps tightening under the national HFC phasedown, so a recharge after a leak a decade from now is likely to cost more than it does today. The two refrigerant families also do not mix, so pairing a new A2L condenser with an existing R-410A coil is off the table, and a full matched replacement is the norm. Most ducted A2L air handlers add a leak sensor that switches the blower on to disperse refrigerant, one more part worth seeing explained on the quote.

    Efficiency against the payback window

The floor. Split air conditioners sold in the Southeast must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 at smaller capacities, while premium variable speed equipment often rates well above that.

Where the upgrade earns its keep. Central Florida runs cooling for most of the year, and heating and cooling can account for more than 40 percent of a typical Florida home’s energy use. A larger house with a sun exposed roof and people home all day sees the shortest payback.

Where it struggles. A small condo, a home likely to be sold within a few years, or a house with leaky attic ductwork. Ducts in a Florida attic can sit in air well above 120 degrees, and losses there can erase much of the gap between a mid tier and top tier condenser. There is also a humidity wrinkle: the Florida Building Commission’s humidity control forum flagged concern that some higher efficiency equipment removes less moisture per hour when it is poorly sized or poorly ducted. Sealing or cleaning ducts and correcting airflow often buys more comfort per dollar than the last few SEER2 points.

    The wiring behind the condenser

The overlooked line item. Many AC quotes cover the equipment and the line set but say little about what feeds them. New condensers list specific breaker and wire sizes on the nameplate, and an outdoor disconnect corroded by years of rain and sprinkler spray may not match.

Where panels push back. Electric heat strips in the air handler, an EV charger or a pool heater can leave a 100 or 150 amp panel short on spaces or capacity. An AC swap is a natural moment to look at the panel, because the circuit has to be right either way.

The code detail. The disconnect must stay within sight of the equipment, and newer electrical code editions have expanded ground fault protection outdoors. Some inverter driven units have tripped those devices, so compatibility belongs in the conversation before install day rather than after the first summer storm.

Trade-off Leans one way when Leans the other way when Question worth asking
Capacity vs comfort The house has large west facing glass or a hot attic The home is well shaded and tightly built Can I see the load calculation?
Older refrigerant vs newer Budget is tight and the home may sell soon You plan to stay 10+ years What will a future recharge cost?
Efficiency vs payback Cooling runs hard and the house is large Ducts leak or the stay is short Were the ducts tested or sealed?
Equipment vs electrical The panel is newer with open spaces Heat strips or an EV charger are planned Does the quote include breaker and disconnect?

    Weighing them together

None of these choices stand alone. A system sized correctly frees up budget for efficiency where it pays, and an honest look at the panel can rule out options before money changes hands. Fall is a practical time to work through it all, since a mild week leaves room to compare quotes, read the load calculation and schedule the permit without a no cool emergency forcing the decision. The best installation is usually the one where every compromise was made on purpose rather than discovered in July.
